What is Registry?

It is an operating system-defined database, which stores all the information and settings of all hardware, software, users and preferences for 32-bit Microsoft operating system only.

  • Any changes made in control panel setting, adding a sound card, file allocation or the installation and removal of 32-bit software are stored in the registry.

  • The physical files that make up the registry are stored in your computer in several hidden files, depending upon the versions of the Windows operating system.

  • It can be edited in Microsoft Windows by executing the command "regedit.exe". To execute the command type start run and type regedit.exe in the dialog box and press enter key or click Ok button. Opens More Info in a new browser window

The registry contains information about your computer, computer users, the peripherals attached to the computer, and the system that makes your computer run. This database is essential to run the computer.
