CD-ROM Drive

CD-ROM drives allow the system to access CD-ROM. CD-ROM drives are quite large, usually the single largest component inside the PC. The front of the CD-ROM drive is visible in the front of the PC, as well as with its boxy shape and metallic appearance, the CD-ROM drive is hard to miss.

CD-ROM stands for Compact Disk Read Only Memory, which means that the data can be read from the disk but you cannot write anything onto it. CD-ROM stores more data when compared to a floppy drive and less when compared to a hard drive. The average size of a CD-ROM is 800 MB.

CD-ROM drives are of two types IDE and SCSI just like the hard disk. On most computers, it is common to have an IDE hard drive and an IDE CD-ROM drive on one controller.
