A storage device stores the data or information in a device. Storage devices store data permanently and the data is not lost in the case of a power failure.
There are various kinds of storage devices designed based on the capacity of data it can store and the cost.
Some of the common storage devices are Floppy Drive, Hard Disk Drive, CD-ROM, DVD, Tape Device etc.
Storage devices are different from the main memory like ROM and RAM. ROM contains permanent instructions which can be only read and RAM is a volatile memory, instructions are stored temporarily for the use of processor.
The advantage with storage devices is that the instructions can be stored, erased and retrieved for computation whenever the need arises.
