Mechanizing Preventive Maintenance
Error Checking in File System and Hard Disks
Error Checking in Hard Disks

The most common error that a hard disk encounters is a read/write errors. Read/write errors will not allow a user to read/write a particular area of the disk. This means that the disk has developed a bad physical spot. This error can not be identified unless an attempt to access data from the faulty sector is made.

To detect the read/write error, you can use utility programs, such as SCANDISK and NDD. These programs scan the surface of the disk and read the content of every sector. This process is known as “Surface Scan” or “Surface Test” because the platter surfaces on the disk where the data is stored is scanned. On finding a problem with any sector, the utlity program reports it.

Tip
Scanning an entire disk volume is time consuming, so you must mechanize this task to run when you are not using your PC.
